The honest guide to going solar in Malta

Independent Editorial Review

Malta’s solar market has matured significantly over the past five years. Panels are cheaper, inverters are smarter, and the grant structure has improved — but the installation landscape remains patchy. Not every company quoting on your job is equally competent.

Our reviewers have spoken with dozens of homeowners across Malta and Gozo who’ve made the switch. The consistent findings: system sizing is often mis-sold, and post-installation service varies enormously. The installers who stand out complete ERA permit work before installation day, provide detailed shading analysis, and offer genuine 10-year workmanship warranties.

On the technology side, monocrystalline PERC panels currently offer the best efficiency-to-cost ratio for Malta’s conditions. Battery storage from Huawei LUNA, GoodWe, and SolarEdge are performing well in field conditions here. If a salesperson is pushing a brand you’ve never heard of with unusually low pricing — that’s a flag worth raising before signing anything.

Common Questions

Malta solar FAQs

Yes — all new photovoltaic installations in Malta require a Development Notification Order (DNO) or full development permit from ERA. Your CheckYourTraders-verified installer will handle this before any equipment is installed.
Net metering allows you to export excess electricity to the Enemalta grid and receive a bill credit at 25c per kWh. Credits are applied quarterly. You’ll sign a net metering agreement with Enemalta after installation is complete.
Most homes with moderate energy usage (400–600 kWh/month) benefit from a 3–5 kWp system. Heavy air conditioning use pushes this to 4–6 kWp. Use our savings calculator above for a recommendation based on your actual Enemalta bill.
Yes, battery storage can be retrofitted to most existing solar PV installations, provided the inverter is compatible or replaced with a hybrid unit. Popular options in Malta include Huawei LUNA2000, GoodWe Lynx, and SolarEdge Energy Bank. Battery storage is now also grant eligible.
Applications are made through the Malta Enterprise online portal and must be submitted before installation begins — retroactive applications are not accepted. Your CheckYourTraders-verified installer should be familiar with the process and can often assist with the application.
Quality installations should include: 25-year panel performance warranty, 10-year panel product warranty, 5–12 year inverter warranty, and 5–10 year workmanship warranty from the installer. Always request these in writing before signing any contract.
